Fonds Éco IGA

Fonds Éco IGA

Nearly 3,000 environmental projects financed throughout Quebec and now New-Brunswick as well.

What is Fonds Éco IGA?

The Fonds Éco IGA was founded in 2008 by Quebec’s IGA grocers, who are contributing their 12th million dollars this year. It is managed by Jour de la Terre, an organization that helps people and organizations reduce their impact on the environment. The Fonds Éco IGA finances concrete projects focused, among others, but not exclusively, on waste management, food waste and sustainable mobility. Since its inception, it has helped fund multiple sustainable projects responding to the realities of the communities in all regions of Quebec and New Brunswick.

The main programs of the Fonds Éco IGA are :

  • The conferences À vos frigos
  • The distribution of sustainable kits
  • Optimizing the residual waste management
  • Sustainable Mobility
À vos frigos

À vos frigos

À vos frigos is a program to raise awareness about food waste and empower residents from Quebec and New Brunswick to take action. For the 5th edition, 2019-2020, 200 free workshops are offered. Whether you’re a company, a municipality or a community centre, organize a fun, informative one-hour workshop at lunchtime or in the evening.

Due to developments in the Covid-19 outbreak, the À vos frigos workshops originally scheduled for spring 2020 have been postponed until fall 2020.

Get beeswax food wraps, a collapsible coffee cup, mesh bags for your fruits and vegetables, and two silicon bags for only $30 (a $75 value).

In view of the situation created by the Covid-19, the distribution of kits has been temporarily suspended.

In 2013, Sobeys Québec began rolling out a major waste management optimization program for IGA supermarkets. The purpose of the program is to give a second life to the largest possible amount of cardboard, leftover food, and other waste generated at IGA supermarkets, by helping retailers improve their residual waste management.

Also, to recognize retailers’ efforts to improve their residual waste management, Jour de la Terre has created Action Reduction, a certification program adapted to supermarkets. This certification is designed to attest to retailers’ efforts, allow them to set concrete goals and inform customers of the retailers’ commitment to reducing waste.
