Melior Program

The Melior program is a Quebec-born initiative aimed at promoting food industry progress and helping put food with higher nutritional value on the market.

What is the Melior Program?

The Melior program, from the Latin word meliorare, which means “to improve,” is a Quebec-born initiative aimed at promoting food industry progress and helping put food with higher nutritional value on the market. It is a program of charters of voluntary commitments to nutritional progress for agri-food industry stakeholders. Inspired by a similar model that was implemented in France, it is the first initiative of its kind in North America and it is entirely based on the realities right here at home.

IGA’s ten commitments

As part of the Melior program, IGA intends to implement several actions over the next two years:

  • Revise the formulation of Compliments breads.
  • Develop fact sheets about lesser known fruits and vegetables to encourage customers to try them and increase their fruit and vegetable intake at the same time.
  • Offer in-store recipe cards that follow precise nutritional criteria.
  • Elaborate training modules for the aides-gourmets who work in our stores.
  • Create an annual in-store event to promote healthy eating habits.
  • Write nutrition blogs on IGA.net to share the pleasure of healthy eating with IGA customers.
  • Develop a strategy to help customers develop a taste for fish.
  • Organize in-store health talks by nutritionists.
  • Develop a new line of creamy soups that provide as many servings of fruits and vegetables per container as possible to help customers consume the recommended daily servings.
  • Create an awareness forum with our suppliers to stress the importance of nutrition, the link between diet and health, and to encourage their active involvement in improving their products.
With 273 merchants, IGA is proud to be the first supermarket banner to commit to this program.
