- Cut buns in half. Mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, and tomato paste, and spread mixture onto inside of buns.
- Evenly divide the slices of ham, turkey, salami, and cheese onto the 4 buns. Top with grated carrot, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate until it's time to serve.
Family tip: For a healthy sandwich, you can use small kaiser rolls and omit the salami, or replace it with vegetarian salami. The kids won't suspect a thing!
Athlete’s tip: Replace the ham with roast beef, double the amount of turkey, and omit the salami, which is fattier.
Vegetarian tip: Use whole grain bread and vegetarian deli meat.
Time saving tip: For a truly tasty, Italian-style submarine, substitute prosciutto for the ham, and use marinated hot peppers sliced into rounds, marinated eggplant, and finely chopped Sicilian black olives in place of the grated carrots and pickles.
