With family, friends or just the two of you, picnics are a favourite summer activity. Some like to picnic in the parks where others prefer to venture further into the great outdoors. Wherever it is, these meals require a little planning.

That classic of classics—the sandwich—is picnic perfection. It’s easy to make, carry and eat, and can be adapted beautifully to every picnicker’s tastes with flavourful salads, garden fresh vegetables and dips, brightly colored and savoury fruits, delectable cheeses, premium cold cuts and delicious snacks.

Best tips for a winning picnic

  • Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
  • Prepare some extra-special protein-packed snacks, such as banana bread, date squares or energy balls for those afternoon cravings.
  • Bring a cooler or thermal bag, ice packs to keep the food cold, airtight containers to hold the leftovers.
  • Don’t forget a tablecloth or blanket, utensils, plates, glasses, serving utensils, napkins, garbage bags, a plastic bag for the dirty dishes, wipes for sticky hands and dirty faces, water bottles and your corkscrew!
  • For the sophisticated picnicker, your can also bring decorations, cushions, streamers, one or two outdoor game, music and anything else you can think of to create a little ambiance.
